Brookfield Planning Board unanimously adopted an expanded eighteen-point annual inspection checklist for the town's two grandfathered gravel pits.
Planning Board · Meeting of September 14, 2026
NH BROOKFIELD — Brookfield Planning Board unanimously adopted an expanded eighteen-point annual inspection checklist for the town's two grandfathered gravel pits. The new form, developed by board member Steven Berry, replaces a five-question checklist and includes checkboxes for slope steepness, drainage, erosion, and barrier adequacy at depths exceeding 15 feet. The board confirmed both the Smith and Moose Mountain pits hold grandfathered status under RSA 155-E:2 and require no new local permit.
Abutter Jennifer McKown raised safety concerns about a 30-foot unreclaimed slope and the absence of a required safety barrier at the Smith pit; the board determined it can document non-compliance and pursue enforcement if state operational standards are violated. The first inspection under the new checklist will occur at Moose Mountain pit.
