Select Board outlines private road ordinance for town standards

NH BROOKFIELD — Brookfield Select Board convenes work session on private road standards. Vice Chair Austin Fifield, with members Steve Patriquin and Jan Ledbetter, discussed an ordinance establishing design requirements for private roads. The proposal would mandate building permits for new private roads, require homeowner maintenance agreements, and establish infrastructure standards including adequate width, culverts, and turnarounds for emergency access.
The town explicitly would not assume liability for private road maintenance. Assistant Archivist Craig Evans was directed to compile existing private road records from the former Road Committee before the board consults fire, police, and code enforcement officials on further drafting.
